10 Steps to a Safe, Low Impact Outdoor Adventure

The Bruce Peninsula is perhaps the most unique and diverse region in Ontario for its natural landscapes and significant flora and fauna. From hiking atop the Niagara Escarpment to paddling along the majestic coastline in a sea kayak, there are several ways to experience the ‘Bruce’ in a low impact, environmentally-friendly manner.

1. Leave a “game plan” or itinerary with someone before you set out.

2. Listen to the weather, particularly if planning a water excursion.

3. Wear and pack the appropriate clothing and be prepared in case of an emergency.

4. Water, water, water. Remember, there is limited access to water on top of the escarpment.

5. Food. Pack lots of snacks and carry ‘high energy’ bars in case of an emergency.

6. Have the appropriate maps and trail guides – if not ask someone who has been there before.

7. Stay on all trails!

8. What goes in must come out! Pack out all garbage.

9. Respect the natural world. Take only photographs!

10. If in doubt, take a guided trip from professionals.
